Express Entry
Express Entry
Express Entry is an electronic system used to manage the applications of skilled workers who wish to become permanent residents of Canada.Once an interested candidate submits an online profile, the federal government determines if the candidate is eligible for a program managed by Express Entry. Eligible candidates are accepted into the Express Entry pool and are ranked according to the Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS). The CRS is a points-based system used by the government to assess and rank candidates in the Express Entry pool. The CRS score is calculated based on a candidate’s age, education, work experience, language skills, as well as other factors.
Approximately every two weeks, the Canadian government selects the highest-scoring candidates from the Express Entry pool and provides them with an Invitation to Apply (ITA) for permanent residence.
To be eligible for Express Entry, candidates must meet the criteria of at least one of the following federal economic immigration programs:
1. Canadian Experience Class
2. Federal Skilled Worker Program
3. Federal Skilled Trades Program
Student Visa
Study Permit
Before you apply for a study permit, you need:
- - A letter of acceptance from a designated learning institution (DLI)
- - A valid passport or travel document
A designated learning institution is a school approved by a provincial or territorial government to host international students. All primary and secondary schools in Canada are designated learning institutions. If you plan to attend a post-secondary school, such as a college or university, make sure it’s on the list. If you need to take certain courses before you are accepted into your program (conditional acceptance), you’ll be given a study permit for the duration of those courses. Once the college or university accepts you into your chosen program, you must apply to extend your study permit.
If you plan to attend a college or university in Quebec, current provincial rules state that international students can only attend a designated learning institution chosen by the Quebec government. You’ll also need a study permit from the Government of Canada to study in Quebec.
Work Permit
Work Permit
Two Canadian federal departments are responsible for work permits. If a Labour Market Impact Assessment (LMIA) is required, the department of Employment and Social Development Canada will review the LMIA application and make a decision on whether or not it approves the application.
The process of obtaining a work permit is handled by the department of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC). Once an LMIA has been approved, you submit a work permit application to IRCC. If an LMIA is not required, you may also apply to IRCC to get a work permit. The work permit provides you with the legal authority to work in Canada for a temporary period of time.
There are two types of work permits you can apply to:
- Open Work Permit
An open work permit is one that enables a foreign worker to work for any employer in Canada. Open work permits do not require foreign nationals to obtain a Labour Market Impact Assessment (LMIA) or a job offer when applying to Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada for a work permit.
- Closed Work Permit
Closed work permits require a foreign worker to only work for the employer who has obtained a positive LMIA and provided them with a job offer. If a foreign worker is no longer going to work for this employer, they need to apply to change the conditions of their work permit if they wish to continue to legally work in Canada.
Visitor Visa
Visitor Visa
A visitor visa (also called a temporary resident visa) is an official document that IRCC stamps in your passport prior to your arrival to Canada. It shows that you meet the requirements needed to enter into the country. Most travellers need a visitor visa to travel to Canada or an Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA). You may also need one if you’re transiting through a Canadian airport on your way to your final destination. The entry document you need depends on:- - the type of travel document you plan to travel with
- the country that issued your travel document
- - your nationality
- - your method of travel to Canada for this trip
Most visitors can stay for up to 6 months in Canada. However, you can extend your stay by applying for a visitor record. A visitor record is not a visa; it is a document that gives you status as a visitor in Canada and allows you to stay longer. It includes a new expiry date, upon which you must leave Canada by.
